Omakase ‘Mystery Tasting Menu’ Night at The Table, Battersea - Review
We visited The Table Battersea, renowned for its delectable dishes and warm, welcoming ambiance, to experience their monthly Omakase ‘Mystery Tasting Menu’ night.
Omakase, meaning "I leave it up to you," is traditionally associated with Japanese dining, where guests entrust the chef to curate a meal using the finest seasonal ingredients. The Table Battersea has taken this concept and expanded it, crafting monthly tasting menus inspired by global cuisines.
Each four-course menu is influenced by a specific chef’s heritage, with the cuisine and country of inspiration only revealed on the night. Designed to celebrate the diverse backgrounds of The Table’s chefs, these menus offer an immersive dining experience rooted in personal culinary memories and global flavours.
Previous events have included a four-course Nepalese tasting menu inspired by Chef Abhay’s roots and upbringing, as well as Japanese, Italian, and British-themed menus. For our visit, we were treated to an incredible showcase of Jamaican cuisine.
With its light and airy boho interiors, The Table Battersea offers a relaxed, neighbourhood feel, complemented by exceptional, friendly service. Our evening began with a Jamaican Margarita, fresh and spicy. We opted for the non-alcoholic version, though a generous dash of rum would have certainly enhanced it. Sweet and tangy, the drink set the perfect tone for the meal ahead. Unlike many tasting menus, portions were generous, and at £40 per person, the experience felt like outstanding value—we left feeling more than satisfied.
Our four-course journey started with Jamaican Patties accompanied by Scotch Bonnet sauce. These golden parcels were bursting with flavour, while the deep-fried plantain added just the right touch of sweetness to balance the heat. The sauce was fiery yet well-balanced—spicy enough to excite the palate but never overpowering.
Next came Butter Bean Soup with Shrimp—and what a revelation it was. The warm, aromatic spices were beautifully balanced, and the soup’s silky consistency made for an indulgent, comforting dish. We were genuinely surprised by just how flavourful and satisfying it turned out to be.
The main courses continued to impress: Jerk Chicken and Jamaican Chickpea Curry. Humble in name but extraordinary in execution, both dishes showcased Jamaica’s rich spice blends. The jerk chicken was fall-apart tender, its smoky, spicy marinade delivering depth without overwhelming the dish. The chickpea curry was just as delightful, with layers of spice and a gentle heat that lingered beautifully.
To round off the evening, we indulged in a spectacular dessert: Banana Fritters, Dark Chocolate & Rum Sauce with Lime Sorbet. The bitterness of the dark chocolate paired exquisitely with the tartness of the lime sorbet, while the hint of rum and the natural sweetness of the banana created a perfectly balanced finale. Had we not been so full, we might have asked for a second helping—it was that good!
As someone not particularly well-versed in Jamaican cuisine, this menu was an absolute revelation. The flavours, the execution, and the overall experience exceeded expectations, leaving us eager to return for another culinary journey.
Highly recommended for adventurous food lovers who enjoy discovering new and exciting flavours.
