Melanin Modalities in Fashion and Culture Exhibition

Melanin Modalities in Fashion and Culture Exhibition

A fabulous new multisensory exhibition called Melanin Modalities in Fashion and Culture opened recently at the Fashion Space Gallery at London College of Fashion on John Princes Street in London.

Designed and curated by Dr Leila Nassereldein, the show features poignant and dynamic work from leading London College of Fashion staff, students and alumni that explores Black culture and history, through the lens of fashion.

The exhibition has been designed as a multi-sensory experience, including sound, smell and visuals to fully immerse the visitor within the space. The space is diffused with the scent of vanilla for example, as the plant originates in South and Central America as well as Caribbean countries.

Taking place as part of UAL’s wider programme of events celebrating Black History Month, the displays are in keeping with this year’s theme of ‘Joy’ with a focus on wellbeing and community. The walls of the gallery have also been painted black in response to the stereotypical ‘white cube’ aesthetic associated with traditional galleries, which often excludes Black voices from their exhibitions and spaces.

Set to run until 22nd October, and with private viewings available, the exhibition is open Monday – Saturday from 10am-5pm and is free to view.
