Lanson Champagne and a Fish & Chips pairing at Poppies Fish & Chips for the. month of Feb
This week, we had the pleasure of visiting Poppies Fish & Chips in Soho for a unique collaboration with the renowned Champagne house, Lanson. Nestled in the heart of Soho, surrounded by an abundance of bars, Poppies Fish & Chips presents an authentic facade of a traditional fish and chip shop. However, this charming exterior belies its wraparound expansive interior, with the classic chippy at its core.
Our reservation was for 6pm, and even at this early hour, the place was buzzing and nearly at full capacity. We were warmly greeted and led to our table by the personable Burak, who remained our attentive waiter for the evening. The menu is extensive, but we opted for their limited time February special: a 20cl mini bottle of Lanson Le Black Creation Champagne paired with their classic fish and chips for just £35.
I chose the cod and chips, while my guest opted for the haddock and chips. Our waiter brought our champagne to the table and opened it with a flourish, making the small bottles feel like a special occasion. Initially, I was sceptical about the pairing, but my doubts soon vanished.
The food arrived promptly and was plentiful. The fish was cooked to perfection, with a crispy golden batter that was delightfully light. The chips were fresh, crispy, and delicious, and even the tartare sauce was so creamy and flavourful that we asked for more. I also ordered a side of mushy peas and was thrilled to find they were proper marrowfat peas, not the processed kind often found in fish and chip shops. The portion sizes were generous, as confirmed by the plates on adjacent tables.
Despite very full bellies, we still sampled the trio of gelato; vanilla, strawberry and chocolate which were exactly what was needed to finish the meal, a palate cleanser of sorts. What surprised me most was how well the champagne complemented the meal. The champagne was exquisite and paired wonderfully with the fish and chips. The service throughout the evening was impeccable, with special mention to Burak, who truly understands the essence of customer service.
Overall, Poppies Fish & Chips in Soho offers a delightful dining experience, blending traditional British fare with a touch of elegance through their collaboration with Lanson. It's a must-visit for anyone looking to enjoy classic fish and chips with a twist.
