A new immersive mixed-reality experience is now at the Natural History Museum
Now open at the Natural History Museum, Visions of Nature is an immersive mixed-reality experience that transports visitors to the year 2125. Using Microsoft’s Hololens 2 mixed reality headsets, this interactive journey lets you explore how today's actions could shape the future of our planet, drawing on insights from the Museum’s leading natural science expert.
Visions of Nature invites audiences on a global tour that reimagines some of the world’s most iconic landscapes—including Scotland’s Highlands and Africa’s Great Green Wall—to envision the resilience of nature and how species might adapt in the face of today’s environmental threats. Through holographic displays, you’ll encounter animals like hawksbill turtles and sparkles of fireflies, brought to life on custom-built sets that seamlessly integrate with stunning augmented reality.
Guiding each step of your journey is Hope, a scientific copilot who will share stories of resilience and survival. At one stop, Hope invites you to reach out to greet a Darwin’s frog, once endangered by habitat loss, now thriving in urban parks thanks to conservation efforts. These moments capture the essence of how collaborative action today can protect species for future generations.
Co-produced by SAOLA Studio, experts in augmented reality for cultural institutions, and informed by the Museum’s latest research, Visions of Nature is part of the Museum’s Fixing Our Broken Planet program.
