Rotorious in Peckham – Review

Peckham has long been a mecca for foodies whether you are seeking quick casual bites or fine dining. Step out of the station onto colourful Rye Lane and any way you turn you are guaranteed a memorable experience in one of its many bars and eateries. Enter Market Stalls, head past the independent boutiques and out the back is Rotorious, our new obsession.

Set up by brothers Adam and Sam Reid, the concept was born out of their ten-year passion for French style rotisserie and creating the perfect slow spit-roasted chicken fused with flavours of the Caribbean. We were made to feel so welcome by them we felt like we were eating in their own backyard. We went for a full rotisserie chicken with all the trimmings – rice, fries, mango and avocado salad, the famous gravy and the pineapple and scotch bonnet chilli sauce.

We also tried the Chicken Poke bowl which was exceptional with pulled chicken, black rice, beans and edamame and topped with delicious crispy onions. The food arrived quickly and looked like a feast  – there really was plenty for two of us to tuck into. The Norfolk Whites chicken is supplied locally and you can tell, the meat fell off the bone and we made very quick work of it. The pimento and tropical spice rub is tasty and moreish, I found myself devouring the chicken skin as well as the meat. All the sides were fresh and delicious – the coleslaw was a particular favourite. How do we describe the gravy?

Made from the juices of the basted chicken as it rotates, it’s a really unique flavour and a secret recipe. We highly recommend you try the hot sauce as it’s not a blow your head off experience, but instead a slow fruity burn. Adam explained they are working on a version to bottle and sell and I suspect like Peckham’s finest Rodney and DelBoy this time next year they might become millionaires from it. They plan to hand over the rotisserie to guest chefs over the coming months which is a very smart move indeed, I’m already planning my next visit to see who’s up.
