One Canada Square, the third tallest building in the UK conjures all the the usual images in our minds. Commerce, suits, deals being done, grand foyers, Cornish food with Californian twist…..wait, what?

Positioned in the aforementioned grand foyer, after-work drinkers gather for cocktails and beers from one of three copper beer tanks. On the other side of the bar, diners sit down to select from a farm-to-fork fish lead menu, featuring the best of Cornish produce. Shutters is just the place for city workers to transport themselves from skyscrapers and business to sun-soaked Californian inspired cuisine. From Brunch through to dinner, the menu boasts twists on classics such as Lobster Benedict, Baked Avocado and French Toast to Lobster Tacos, and variations of Surf & Turf.

We are here for dinner and hungrily we opt for colourful dishes to brighten up an otherwise grey London evening. One of our favourite dishes of the evening comes first, the Cornish Crab on Sourdough toast, which is wonderfully…..crabby.  A real taste of the sea with a brown crab mayo, citrusy preserved lemon and a hint of chilli spice. The Crab Nachos are a nice spin on the Mexican classic with jalapeño cheese, sour cream, lime and pickles. Perhaps the crabbyness volume could be turned up a notch but they are enjoyable all the same.

We try Lobster Tacos two ways, the first a lobster and scallop fritter on blue corn tortillas with salsa rojo, lettuce and pickles. The second is a Cocktail Taco, with lobster & crab, chipotle mayo, lettuce, charred pineapple and blue corn fritters. Both are equally colourful and look great on the plate, but the more memorable is the Cocktail Taco which gives you more of that seafood punch.

The Crispy Seabass is one of those dishes that when you see it delivered to someone else’s table you mutter “oooh”. It’s a whole seabass with an eye catching nest of crispy noodles sat on top. The sticky soy, ginger and chilli marinade was the magic touch, so much so we ordered more. As eye catching as the crispy noodle nest was, whilst eating a whole delicious fish, it did give us trouble differentiating between noodle and bone.

Ending with a sweet note of Churros and Brownie Ice Cream Sunday, Shutters delivered on visually impressive food that with a few tweaks to the textures could be a great dining joint for the city folk, locals and visitors With their proper Sunday roasts too, Shutters also caters for the weekend visitors and locals.
