Mildreds, Covent Garden – Review

Mildreds needs no introduction to plant-based lovers, it’s been a firm vegetarian favourite since 1988. Mildreds recently opened a new sleek and sophisticated branch in Covent Garden featuring panelled walls, marble tabletops and striking artwork adorning the walls.

Just a short walk from Leicester Square station, Mildreds is easy to get to, and as summer approaches, offers alfresco dining for the warmer days and evenings. It’s busy for a Tuesday evening and there is a buzz of excitement in the air. Our waiter was attentive from the moment we walked through the doors, which is always a good start. The menu consists of a good variety of nutrient-packed plant-based small plates, mains, sides, Mildred-style veggie burgers, and desserts.

For the starter, I went for the chipotle cheez nachos, black bean molé, pico de Gallo and sour cream. The nachos had a reassuringly un-soggy, crispy bite and the toppings complimented each other nicely,  a great start to the meal.

For my main, I opted for the Alma Bowl – sweetcorn goji quinoa, rainbow ribbons, neep & beet pickle, leche de tigre shrub, almond queso fresco, avocado cream, omega seeds. On recommendation I added a side of crispy tofu, which really helped lift the dish. without it, it can taste a little bland, so I would definitely recommend the side of tofu. The creamy avocado was a standout feature and overall the dish was fresh, vibrant and presented beautifully.

For dessert, the waiter recommended the crème brûlée, being lactose intolerant, this is something I’ve always avoided, but thankfully not this time. This plant-based crème brûlée really blew me away, it was light, creamy and indulgent. My only nit-picking negative would be that I wanted MORE, it was the perfect end to the meal. Mildreds is very popular, so if you want to experience that delicious plant-based crème brûlée and much more, I’d highly advise you book a table beforehand!
