Bombay Delight – Review

From the moment we walked into Bombay Delight in Wimbledon we were greeted with a smile, and the great service continued throughout the meal. The staff were diligent and knowledgeable, and happy to help us navigate this impressive and modern take on traditional Indian dishes.

The care that had gone into the mouth-watering menu had clearly also gone into the décor of the restaurant, with all the interiors from the marble tables and textured wall coverings to the framed newspaper prints (sourced from Mumbai), there was clearly a high level of care and pride that ran through the business.

We had a French Martini and a On Bombay Beach cocktail whilst perusing the well thought through menu, and were struck by the number of dishes that would suit a vegetarian and vegan diet. The restaurant’s philosophy of using fresh and natural ingredients could be seen in the selection of food available.

We nibbled through our popadums, for which we’d never seen such an array – with different textures and flavours it was a fun departure from the norm, and with a Vegan beetroot, plus mint and a homemade Bombay chutney as dips, we had never had so many flavour combinations!

For starters we had the Avocado Chat (v) and Tandoori Jhinga (Prawns), which were both delightful. The prawns were juicy, and despite being done tandoori style, they were not overcooked or tough. My only complaint was that there wasn’t more! Although I wasn’t sure what to expect from the avocado, I was very happy with the stack of avocado, potato and spices presented on a quirky wagon. With pops of pomegranate, the cold complimented the warm smoky prawns well. All washed down with a glass of the Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, which was fresh and easy drinking.

For mains we went for a mix of vegetarian and fish once again. With the Aubergine Baigan (cooked with onion, tomato and tempered with ginger) complimenting the Chefs Signature Samundri Khazana which was a dinner to end all dinners; salmon, monkfish, tigers prawns mousse stuffed into a calamari, with garlic, tomato and coconut sauce with a hint of raw mango. We chose pilau rice and the chili and cheese naan, which didn’t disappoint in the heat stakes (so those who prefer a medium heat be wary!). Both mains were succulent and well cooked, we didn’t miss meat at all, with the chunky aubergine in place. And the chefs special would be the perfect Sunday meal replacement. We got the impression no expense is spared in these plentiful and fresh dishes.

Dessert was equally as tasty, for those with a sweet tooth, the Chocolate Brownie was a fudgy, chocolate sensation. And the Gulab Jamun provided a spongey donut style ball, both with ice cream.

All in all, I have to say we were really stuck for choice on this impressive menu, we couldn’t decide what to eat. And the staff and ingredients were fit for this great menu. We will definitely be back to sample more from what we both described as the most of the most delicious Indian restaurants we’ve ever been to!
